Pat Hannam, WATER’s Education Lead, to head up our new Education Programme

About Pat

Pat is passionate about teaching and finding ways for all of us as teachers to think together about the educational changes needed at this point in history. She is currently writing about ‘regenerative education’ and has taught across all age ranges.

Before moving back to Devon in 2022, Pat was an education adviser/inspector for Hampshire County Council. She is an honorary research fellow at the University of Exeter and has a PhD in education.

Pat lives in Ermington and is making a modest forest/permaculture garden where she and her husband moved to 3 years ago.

Pat is happiest in or near to the water. She is an all-year-round sea swimmer and loves kayaking and coast path walking.

Pat will be reaching out to schools and colleges in the catchment to bring the river alive to those who think “it’s just a river.”

You can contact Pat at Patriciah@ermeriver.org.

Book Quest

WATER is all set to dive into the summer Book Quest

Ivybridge Library’s Summer Book Quest is part of a Devon-wide initiative to encourage more 5-11 year olds to read. This year’s theme will be Deep Sea Adventure and as our local river ends up at the sea, there’s a good link between the Erme, Ivybridge and the coast.

Pat Hannam will be running a story telling session 10:30 – 11:45 on Monday 11th August. There will also be a library-based treasure hunt, based on wildlife on the Erme and a continuous slide show explaining some of the actions WATER is taking to help restore the Erme to its rightful, natural, healthy state.

Here’s more Book Quest information from Ivybridge Library

This summer, Ivybridge Library is getting its very own reading challenge – The Summer Book Quest, Deep Sea Adventure.

To complete the Summer Book Quest you need to do three things.

  1. Visit the library
  2. Read what you like
  3. Enjoy quest activities

Children who sign up for the Summer Book Quest, will receive a Deep Sea Adventure booklet in which they can record the number of times they visited the library, log their reading, and tick off quest activities. For each element children will be given a sticker.

When children have completed all three sections and collected all their stickers, they will receive a certificate and a ninja starfish key chain. We have also partnered with The Watermark and Fusion Leisure Centres, so as in previous years, children will receive two vouchers. One for a free swim at the pool and one for a free ticket to the Watermark cinema (both when accompanied by paying adults).

We also have a two free Crealy tickets for one lucky finisher.

The Summer Book Quest is completely FREE. It launches on 12 July and finishes on 6 September – perfect to keep children busy over the summer holidays! Children do need to be members of the library to do the Summer Book Quest, but it’s free (and quick!) to join and library membership gives your child access to a wealth of free books.

To add to the fun, we have a number of exciting activities throughout the holidays, including an art workshop led by a professional artist using recycled materials to create a sea themed window display in the children’s area, a story time led by the WATER (Wild About the Erme River) project, visits from Wembury Marine Centre,  and Seadream Education will be bringing VR headsets to explore the local marine environment.  Please see our website or facebook page for details of times, dates and ticket information plus more exciting events!

We look forward to seeing you in the library soon!
