Catchment sensitive farming, especially in protected landscapes like the Erme, is becoming a topic of increasing interest to farmers in South Devon. Farming in an efficient way that protects water, air and soil is essential to sustainable food production and protection of our environment.
WATER and CSF are hosting an event for farmers in the catchment to meet, to share ideas and have their voices heard about the best way forward in this increasingly important balance between preserving income and preserving nature. Following the event, we will be working with the farmers on a long-term basis to support actions that improve and protect the environment.
The event is supported by: DEFRA, Catchment Sensitive Farming, which is part of Natural England, South Devon National Landscape and the Farming in Protected Landscapes programme as well as Devon Wildlife Trust.
Catchment Sensitive Farming advisers are locally based, so they understand the challenges faced by farmers in the Erme catchment. They can offer advice, tailored to each business, on a range of key farming topics including what capital grants may be applicable for priority catchments; to help reduce soil erosion and nutrient or pesticide losses to water.
Collaborative working is vital for a successful Catchment Based Approach (CaBA) to improve and have a healthy environment where we can produce food sustainably and where nature can thrive.
More than 1,500 organisations are engaged with CaBA nationwide, improving the quality of water and the environment. WATER would like to encourage that same spirit of collaboration at a local level in the Erme catchment which is why it is supporting this event for local farmers.
